Introduction

The practical running of a daycare centre consists of much more than just socializing with the children. The Nappula project rose from the needs and challenges of the City of Helsinki's daycare organization. The project aimed to increase everyday leisure in order to give more time for the children.

Reason to Be Selected

The Nappula project tested how to benefit from the use of contactless technologies (such as RFID and NFC) in daycare centres. The goal was that new technologies would aid in presence monitoring and reporting, which were only done manually at the moment. The hope was to leave more time for pedagogic work and being together with the children. Accurate
data on presence makes it easier and faster to plan work shifts.

Highlights:

The Nappula project took place from 2009 until 2012. It was part of the extensive, EU-funded Smart Urban Spaces research project.

Details

The project was piloted in two daycare centres in the Herttoniemi area. The personnel of the centres, as well as parents of the children, played an integral part in the development. Cooperation is important, since the project was not about testing a finished product, but rather about developing the entire concept together with the users. The project was carried out in stages. This made it possible to take full advantage of all the experiences gathered along the way.
The project was conducted with the City of Helsinki Social Services Department. The daycare centres participating were Herttoniemi and Tuorinniemi. Forum Virium Helsinki coordinated the project, being in charge of the planning and execution. The project was done in close co-operation with the City of Oulu that was working on a similar pilot. WhileOnTheMove, a Smart Urban Spaces project partner was in charge of developing the application for monitoring presence. The user interface for the daycare application was designed by Nordkapp.
