Introduction

The SteelStacks Arts + Cultural Campus rose from the shadows of the former Bethlehem Steel Plant, invigorating the region through the transformation of an abandoned industrial site into a vibrant, urban, arts and entertainment destination.

Bethlehem Iron and Steel Group is a leading industrial group active in the 20th century, with factories all over the world. In 1995, the group halted its smelting operations in Bethlehem and closed its factories, ending the local industrial history and the inseparable lifestyle of thousands of blue-collar residents and factories. In order to enable the site to continue to use in the future, the park based on the existing texture of the abandoned site, part of the key structure has been transformed to bring a new perspective and experience, so that the park has become a unique community space to meet the needs of the 21st century.

Reason to Be Selected

The project demonstrates the power of design to catalyze communityrevitalization, by paying homage to the history and integrity of the site, andallowing visitors the opportunity to once again stand at the foot of the iconicBethlehem Steel blast furnaces. The project seamlessly knits together thereinvented steel plant site with an established neighborhood and its commercialcorridor, building a heightened sense of community across the City of Bethlehemand Lehigh Valley region.

Details

Preservation of industrial characteristics: The main design intent of the project is to create extraordinary scenes andfacilities that take full advantage of the magnificent scale of the furnace toprovide a background for festivals, artistic activities and musicalperformances throughout the year. As part of the Bethlehem Iron and SteelWorks, the new park will highlight the site's features and the community ofBethlehem by preserving its historic integrity, enabling visitors (includingformer steelmakers and their relatives) to return to the site and to stand onceagain on the landmark furnace. Application of sustainable materials: The foundation of the existing building was demolished on a large scale,and the permeable surface material was replaced by the impermeable material,and the storm runoff was reduced as much as possible. The original barren sitesplanted plants to increase the ecological capacity of the park. Low levellighting reduces energy consumption.

Building community homes: A community awareness has been established for local residents andtourists to revitalize abandoned sites. The park became the front yard of theBethlehem Tourist Center and promoted the development of non-profitorganizations working with it in the public sphere. These organizations are nowworking with new nonprofit organizations in the park and Discover Lehigh Valleyto provide landscape maintenance, financing and visitor services. In terms ofenvironmental impact, the win-win development model makes this redevelopmentproject both innovative and sustainable.

Conclusions

The success of the project is that it improves the sustainability of thepark's economy, promotes the development of private enterprises, the use of oldbuildings and surrounding sites, and provides support for existing businessesin the community. In terms of environmental impact, the win-win developmentmodel makes this redevelopment project both innovative and sustainable.
